First Impressions
Tyrconnell — named after a legendary racehorse that won the 1876 Queen Victoria Stakes at 100/1 odds. The horse was owned by the Watt family, who also ran a distillery in Derry. The brand was revived by Cooley Distillery in the 1980s.
The Double Distillation
Double distilled — unusual for Irish whiskey, which typically triple-distils. This gives it a slightly fuller, more robust character than most Irish single malts. Now produced under Beam Suntory at Kilbeggan. NAS, bottled at 40%.
Tasting
Orchard fruit and honey nose with banana cream pie. Grassy malt palate with toasted grains, caramel, and fudge. The finish is long and toasty with lingering nutmeg. The double distillation gives it more body than typical Irish.
The Verdict
Tyrconnell earns a 6.5 — a solid entry-level Irish single malt at £28. The 100/1 racehorse story gives it charm, and the double distillation gives it character. Not the most refined Irish whiskey, but hearty, honest, and excellent value for the price.
