Before Diageo upgraded Mannochmore's Flora & Fauna bottling to twelve years, there was a 10 Year Old expression that is now discontinued but still found in specialist retailers. It shares the same malty, cereal-forward character as the 12 but with a lighter, more spirity quality from the shorter maturation.
Bottled at 43%, the 10 carries less oak influence than its successor, which means the distillery's green, slightly aldehydic character is more prominent. For those who want to taste Mannochmore's raw personality without the tempering effect of longer ageing, the 10 offers a more transparent window.
The nose is light and malty — grass, green apple, honey, and a faint floral quality. The palate delivers cereal malt, citrus, biscuit, and white pepper, with less body than the 12 but more freshness. The dryness that characterises Mannochmore is present but less pronounced.
The finish is medium, with malt, pepper, and a clean close. As a discontinued Flora & Fauna expression, remaining bottles will only become scarcer. Whether it is worth seeking out depends on how much you value transparency over polish — the 12 is objectively more accomplished, but the 10 has a youthful honesty that is appealing in its own right.
