Balcomie is Kingsbarns' sherry cask expression — fully matured in first-fill sherry hogsheads rather than the bourbon-dominated Doocot or the retired Dream to Dram. It is the richest, darkest whisky in the distillery's range, and a statement of intent about the kind of whisky Kingsbarns aspires to produce.
Named after Balcomie Castle in East Fife, the whisky uses the same locally grown barley as all Kingsbarns expressions. The sherry cask maturation is European oak, imparting dried fruit, chocolate, and spice to the distillery's naturally clean, citric spirit. Bottled at 46% without chill filtration.
The nose is rich and sherried: dark fruit, Christmas cake, walnut, cocoa, and cinnamon. The palate delivers stewed fruit, dark chocolate, orange peel, ginger, and a creamy sweetness from the sherry wood. The spirit's citric brightness prevents the sherry from becoming heavy.
The finish is medium-long, with spice, dried fruit, and a warming close. It is a confident expression from a young distillery, and the quality of the sherry casks is evident. As Kingsbarns' stocks age, Balcomie will only improve — but even now, it holds its own against more established sherried malts.
