Laphroaig Cask Strength is the 10 Year Old with the volume turned up to eleven. Released in annual batches at whatever strength the casks deliver — typically between 56% and 60% ABV — it is the expression that Laphroaig purists consider the definitive bottle. Everything that the 10 does at 40%, Cask Strength does with more intensity, more texture, and more staying power.
The production is identical to the standard 10: ex-bourbon barrel maturation, Islay peat, the same stills and warehouses. The only difference is the absence of dilution. The spirit arrives in the bottle exactly as it emerges from the cask, and the result is transformative. At cask strength, Laphroaig's medicinal peat, iodine, and seaweed acquire a richness and complexity that water washes away.
The nose is intense: iodine, bandages, sea spray, peat smoke, and a powerful sweetness — butterscotch, vanilla, honey — that the 40% bottling only hints at. The palate is a revelation: thick, oily, medicinal peat, smoked fish, seaweed, lemon, honey, and a dark toffee sweetness that meets the peat with open arms. The mouthfeel is luxurious.
The finish is immense — long, warming, and persistent, with iodine, salt, and smoke that refuse to fade. A few drops of water tame the heat and open further layers, but the spirit is remarkably approachable even at full strength. Cask Strength is Laphroaig at its most uncompromising, and for fans of the distillery, it is simply the best bottle in the range.
