First Impressions
Tomintoul 16 — 'The Gentle Dram' from the highest village in the Scottish Highlands. Founded 1965 with four steam-heated stills and water from Ballantruan Spring. Now owned by Angus Dundee. IWSC Gold Medal winner. Fourth-generation distiller Robert Fleming oversees production.
The Gentle Approach
Matured in bourbon casks for 16 years, bottled at 40%. The gentle nickname is earned — this is a whisky that doesn't shout. The Speyside character is soft, honeyed, and malt-focused. Some reviewers love the approachability; others wish it had more punch.
Tasting
Shy nose that opens with pine, vanilla, and honey. Medium-bodied palate of honeyed oats, caramel, and fudge with espresso and almonds. The finish is pleasant but fleeting — minty, peachy, with a peppery tingle. The 40% ABV limits the impact.
The Verdict
Tomintoul 16 earns a 6.5 — a pleasant, approachable Speysider that lives up to its 'Gentle Dram' nickname. At £42 for a 16-year-old, it's fair value. But the 40% bottling is, as one reviewer put it, 'a crime' — at 46% this would shine. Ideal for beginners; experienced drinkers will want more.
