Penderyn has been quietly building a reputation since the early 2000s as the standard-bearer for Welsh whisky, and the Sherrywood expression — finished in Oloroso sherry casks — sits at the heart of their core range. At 46% ABV and without an age statement, this is a whisky that asks to be judged on what is in the glass rather than what is on the label. I am entirely comfortable with that proposition.

The Sherrywood belongs to a growing category of non-age-statement single malts bottled at a sensible strength, without chill filtration, and priced to compete with established Scottish and Irish names. At £46.50, it sits in a bracket where it must justify itself against some serious competition — entry-level Speysiders, well-regarded Irish pot stills, and a handful of accomplished Japanese expressions all crowd this shelf. That Penderyn has the confidence to place itself here says something about where Welsh whisky stands today.

What distinguishes this expression is the sherry cask influence. Oloroso finishing tends to bring weight, dried fruit character, and a certain richness that rounds out younger or lighter spirit. It does not attempt to be something it is not — there is no overwrought marketing mythology here, just solid whisky in a handsome bottle. For anyone curious about what Wales can produce, or simply looking for a reliable sherry-influenced single malt that will not break the bank, the Sherrywood is a genuinely worthwhile purchase. It has earned its place on my shelf, and it will earn its place on yours.

Pour this one neat at room temperature and give it five minutes to open up in the glass. If you find the sherry influence a touch firm on first sip, add no more than a teaspoon of still water — at 46%, it responds well without losing its composure. This is an excellent after-dinner whisky, the kind of thing you reach for when the plates have been cleared and the conversation has slowed down. A Highball would not be a crime with this bottle, but I think you would be selling it short. Give it the time and the quiet it deserves.
