Maker's Mark Private Selection is the distillery's most personal expression — a programme that lets retailers, bars, and clubs design their own bourbon stave by stave. Each fully matured Maker's Mark cask is fitted with ten finishing staves chosen from five proprietary virgin oak profiles: Baked American Pure 2, Seared French Cuvée, Maker's 46, Roasted French Mocha, and Toasted French Spice. With over nine million combinations possible, no two barrels are the same.
Once the staves are inserted, the barrel is rolled into Maker's limestone cellar — the same chilled cave used for Maker's 46 — and rested for roughly nine weeks at controlled cool temperatures. The cold soak slows extraction, pulling delicate spice and pastry notes from the wood without the bitter tannin that warmer ageing can produce.
Bottled at cask strength (typically around 110-114 proof) and never chill filtered, Private Selection wears its wheated DNA proudly — soft, round, sweet — but the finishing staves layer complexity over that familiar honeyed core. The expression has become a cult favourite among American whiskey clubs, and good picks can fetch a premium far above shelf price.
It is a brilliant idea executed with characteristic Maker's restraint — bespoke without ever feeling gimmicky.
