There are few whisky releases that carry the weight of genuine occasion, but Hakushu 12 Year Old in its 100th Anniversary bottling is one of them. Suntory's centenary is no small milestone — a hundred years of Japanese whisky-making, and the Hakushu distillery remains one of the most singular production environments in the world. Nestled in the forests of the Japanese Southern Alps, Hakushu has always produced whisky with a character quite unlike anything coming out of Scotland or Kentucky. This anniversary edition of the 12 Year Old is a fitting tribute to that legacy.

I should be clear: Hakushu 12 has been a personal favourite for years. It disappeared from shelves during the Japanese whisky shortage and its return was welcome news. This centenary bottling, presented at the standard 43% ABV, doesn't claim to be a radically different liquid — it's a celebration of what Hakushu does best. And what Hakushu does best is freshness. This is a single malt that has always stood apart from the richer, sherried profile of its sibling Yamazaki. Where Yamazaki leans into dried fruit and spice, Hakushu has always been the green, herbaceous counterpoint — closer in spirit to a Highland Park or a lighter Speyside than to anything else in the Japanese canon.

Tasting Notes

At 12 years old, this is a whisky that balances youthful vitality with genuine maturity. The style is clean, precise, and gently smoky — Hakushu uses a proportion of lightly peated malt in its vatting, which gives it a wisp of smoke that never overwhelms. Expect crisp green apple, gentle botanicals, and that distinctive mintiness that Hakushu fans will recognise immediately. The 43% ABV is approachable without feeling thin; there's enough body here to reward patience. It's a whisky that unfolds rather than announces itself.

The Verdict

At £180, this sits at a premium over the standard Hakushu 12, and you're paying partly for the commemorative packaging and the significance of the centenary. Is it worth it? I think so, with a caveat. If you've never tried Hakushu 12, this is a fine entry point into one of Japan's most distinctive distillery styles — and the anniversary presentation makes it something worth keeping on the shelf. If you already know and love the standard bottling, the collectability factor adds genuine value. Hakushu remains one of the most interesting single malts produced anywhere in the world, and a century of production deserves recognition.

I'm scoring this 8.3 out of 10. It's an excellent whisky with real character and a sense of place that few distilleries can match. The slight premium over standard retail is justified by the occasion, though I'd have loved to see Suntory push the ABV up to 46% or offer a non-chill-filtered version for the centenary. That would have made this exceptional rather than merely very good. As it stands, this is a confident, well-made single malt that honours its heritage without relying on gimmicks.

Best Served

Hakushu was born for the Highball. Fill a tall glass with ice, pour a measure, and top with chilled soda water at a ratio of about one to three. The effervescence lifts those green, herbal notes beautifully. That said, I'd encourage you to try it neat first — give it ten minutes in the glass and let it open up. A few drops of cool water will coax out additional complexity. This is a whisky that rewards both the contemplative sipper and the casual drink-maker, which is part of its enduring appeal.
