Tasting Notes

Nose

Aged leather and pipe tobacco lead, with dark cherry, oiled oak, and a thread of orange peel rising from beneath a soft caramel sweetness.

Palate

Burnished oak and toffee unfurl across the tongue, joined by stewed dark fruit, espresso, and the dusty cocoa of an old library. Beautifully restrained at 50.5%.

Finish

Long, dry, and dignified — leather, charred oak, and lingering bittersweet chocolate that fades like a closing chord.

Few bourbons carry the gravitas of Eagle Rare 17 Year. Released annually as part of Buffalo Trace's Antique Collection — the BTAC — it is the elder statesman of a label that begins with the more accessible Eagle Rare 10. Where the 10 is sprightly and approachable, the 17 is contemplative, aged in the upper floors of Warehouse K and bottled at a measured 50.5% ABV.

The mash bill is Buffalo Trace's celebrated Mash Bill #1 — the same low-rye recipe behind Buffalo Trace itself, Eagle Rare, and Stagg. What seventeen Kentucky summers do to that liquid is the entire point. Evaporative loss is brutal in the high ricks, but the survivors emerge concentrated, layered, and improbably elegant.

On the nose, this is a bourbon that whispers rather than shouts. Old leather, polished walnut, and dark cherry sit alongside oiled tobacco and a hint of orange oil. The palate confirms the promise — toffee and burnished oak, stewed plums, espresso bean, and a powdery cocoa finish that calls to mind antique furniture and old books.

The finish is the masterstroke. Long, dry, restrained, and unmistakably aged — there is no heat to fight through, only the slow unfurling of every cask year. This is the rare BTAC release that does not require water, ice, or apology.

Released since 2000 as a BTAC mainstay, Eagle Rare 17 commands cult demand and lottery-only retail allocation. At suggested $99 it is a bargain; at secondary prices it is a splurge. Either way, it remains one of the most poised aged bourbons America produces.
