Before Blanton's, bourbon came in batches. Colonel Albert Blanton changed that in 1984, selecting individual barrels from Warehouse H at what is now Buffalo Trace Distillery and bottling them unblended. It was the world's first commercially marketed single barrel bourbon, and the concept reshaped the industry. Four decades later, the horseshoe-topped bottle remains one of the most recognisable — and most hunted — in American whiskey.

The Original is bottled at 46.5% ABV, the most widely available of five different Blanton's expressions that range from 40% to cask strength. The spirit comes from Buffalo Trace's high-rye mashbill — Mash Bill #2 — and is selected from the upper floors of the legendary Warehouse H, where temperature swings drive deeper interaction with the charred white oak.

The palate is full and soft: caramel, honey, brown sugar, leather, charred oak, and a rye spice that adds structure without aggression. The hype surrounding Blanton's has become its own phenomenon — the hunting, the collecting, the speculation — but beneath the frenzy, there is a genuinely good bourbon. Not the best at its price point, perhaps, but a whiskey that earned its legend before the hype machine took over.
