Tasting Notes

Nose

Christmas cake, dark muscovado sugar, polished oak and orange peel macerated in brandy.

Palate

Thick and oily — black cherry, dark chocolate, walnut and clove warmth, all underpinned by dense Oloroso sweetness.

Finish

Long, drying, with bitter cocoa, leather and a final flicker of cinnamon.

The A'bunadh series — Gaelic for the origin — was launched in 1997 as Aberlour's reconstruction of the cask-strength, sherry-matured drams the distillery had produced before the modern era of standardised bottling. Each batch is drawn from first-fill Oloroso sherry butts, bottled at natural strength without chill-filtration or the addition of water. No two releases are identical, and the batch number on the label is the only way to track them.

Batch 50 sits firmly in the series' established style. The nose is unapologetically rich — Christmas cake batter, muscovado, candied orange and the gentle resinous note of well-seasoned European oak. There is no shyness here, no Speyside lightness; this is the heavier, fortified-wine end of the regional spectrum, the sort of dram Charles Doig might have tasted when he was raising the distillery's pagoda roofs in 1898.

The palate, at 59.6% ABV, is dense and viscous. Black cherry compote, walnut bread, dark chocolate and a confident clove-and-cinnamon spice arrive in close formation. A drop of water tames the alcohol but does little to thin the texture. The finish is long and properly drying, with bitter cocoa and old leather lingering well after the glass is empty.

A'bunadh remains one of the most consistently rewarding cask-strength single malts on the shelf, and Batch 50 is a creditable example of the house style. It will not surprise the seasoned sherry-bomb drinker, but it will not disappoint them either — and that, in this corner of Speyside, is the entire point.
