First Impressions
1792 Bottled-in-Bond arrived in 2017 as a limited release before becoming a regular expression. At 100 proof, aged a minimum of four years and the product of one distillation season at one distillery, it wears its Bottled-in-Bond Act credentials proudly.
Distillery & Heritage
The Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897 was America's first consumer protection law for spirits, guaranteeing authenticity at a time when rectifiers routinely adulterated whiskey. Barton 1792 — Bardstown's oldest working distillery — leans into that heritage with this release, using their signature high-rye mashbill to produce a bourbon that tastes both classical and assertive.
Tasting Notes in Detail
The nose is rich and layered: vanilla, baking spice, dried apricot, charred oak and deep caramel. The palate is full-bodied and oily, with caramel and dark brown sugar meeting cinnamon toast, nutmeg and leather. Rye spice builds steadily alongside oak char and a dusting of cocoa. The finish runs long and dry, with pepper, tobacco and faint dark chocolate lingering.
Verdict
One of the best value Bottled-in-Bond bourbons on the market. More depth and spice than the Small Batch, with the kind of structure that rewards both neat sipping and a serious Old Fashioned.
