Tasting Notes

Nose

Orchard fruit and malt, honey, graham cracker, caramel, banana cream pie, melted butter, honeyed cereal, orange pith, vanilla — inviting and warm

Palate

Grassy malt, toasted grains, burnt sweetness, stone fruit, caramel, toasted bananas, vanilla, toffee, cocoa, rich fudge with granary toast — creamy mouthfeel

Finish

Long and toasty — malt, fruit, wood, overcooked caramel, lingering nutmeg spice, drying oak — impressive length for the price

Expert Review

7/10

Named after a legendary racehorse that won the 1876 Queen Victoria Stakes at 100/1 odds, owned by the Watt family who also ran a distillery in Derry. The brand was revived by Cooley Distillery in the 1980s. Double distilled (unusual for Irish, which typically triple-distils). Now produced under Beam Suntory at Kilbeggan. One of the most affordable Irish single malts.
