Let us be honest about what Wild Turkey Spiced is and is not. It is not straight bourbon — at 35% ABV (70 proof) it falls below the legal minimum and is classified as a flavoured spirit. It is Wild Turkey bourbon infused with natural cinnamon and warm baking spices, designed for mixing, shots and cold autumn afternoons.
Judged against its siblings — Russell's Reserve, Rare Breed, the Master's Keep line — it will always lose. Judged against American Honey, Fireball and the rest of the flavoured-whiskey shelf, it is a different conversation entirely. And on those terms, it is actually quite good.
The nose is unmistakable: cinnamon bark and a whiff of red-hot candy, lifted by vanilla and a thread of the Wild Turkey caramel you know from the core range. It smells like a cinnamon roll fresh from the oven, which is entirely the point.
On the palate it is sweet and warm. Cinnamon arrives first, then brown sugar, clove, candied orange peel and a lick of toffee. The body is light — the lower ABV makes sure of that — but the flavour is bright and clean rather than syrupy. Mid-palate there is enough of the base bourbon peeking through to remind you that this started life as actual Kentucky whiskey.
The finish is short and spicy, with cinnamon heat and vanilla fading quickly. Mix it into hot apple cider, build a spicy whiskey sour, or pour it cold at a tailgate. For what it is, it is honest work.
