Tasting Notes

Nose

Sherry, spiced plums, mixed berry preserves, warm cinnamon toast, butter.

Palate

Sweet, dry sherry, salted butter on a toasted english muffin. Clean and uncomplicated, yet full and satisfying.

Finish

Continued sherry notes from the nose right on through the finish. Charred oak on the back end with long, lingering tannic notes punctuated by sweet and very slightly salty caramel.

The Macallan 18 Year Old Review (Purple Box) from The Macallan, aged 18 years — a Scotch expression worthy of considered evaluation.

Nose

Appearance A deep caramel amber in the glass, rich and inviting. The legs are slow and full-bodied, coating the sides of the glass and lingering there — a visual promise of what is to come. Nose Sherry dominates from the first nosing, but it is far from one-dimensional. There are layers of spiced plums, mixed berry preserves, warm cinnamon toast, and a gentle butteriness that speaks to the quality of the cask selection. This is a nose you could return to repeatedly and find something new each time. Finish The sherry character carries through from nose to finish without interruption. Charred oak emerges on the back end, and there are long, lingering tannic notes punctuated by sweet and very slightly salty caramel. It is a finish that rewards patience.

Palate

Palate Sweet, dry sherry leads the way, followed by salted butter on toasted English muffin — an unusual descriptor, perhaps, but one that captures the warmth and richness perfectly. It is clean and uncomplicated, yet full and deeply satisfying. The Macallan has always understood that complexity is not the same as clutter, and this expression demonstrates that principle beautifully. Verdict The Macallan 18 sits at a challenging price point in today's market. Like Johnnie Walker Blue Label and other premium expressions, the conversation inevitably turns to whether the whisky justifies the considerable outlay. In my view, the quality of the liquid itself is beyond question — it is simply exquisite. This is not the most complex whisky you will ever taste, but it is a greatest hits of clean Highland Scotch with the sherry influence turned up to precisely the right level. The 18 Year Old is notably more approachable and reliable than The Macallan 12, offering a refinement and confidence that the younger expression has not yet achieved. Whether that additional maturity is worth the roughly £200 premium per bottle is a question only your palate and your wallet can answer together.

Finish

For enthusiasts of clean, sherry-forward single malts, this is a must-try whisky. I found my curiosity handsomely rewarded.

Verdict

The Macallan 18 Year Old Review (Purple Box) delivers a thoroughly accomplished whiskey that justifies its $200 price point. It is well-crafted, balanced, and worthy of a place in any considered collection.
