Tasting Notes

Nose

Lemon rind and peaches leap from the glass while genmaicha green tea bubbles up through it. Light coconut can also be found.

Palate

Forest moss and malt take charge, but the palate moves quickly to light thanksgiving gravy and buttery vanilla with sage. Light sandalwood and coconut roll to a finish of honeysuckle, cream, and a hint of cut grass.

Finish

There is a lot to like about Whisky Review: Bruichladdich Bere Barley 2013 on paper. At 50%ABV); $139 and $139.99, let us see if it lives up to expectations.

Palate

Forest moss and malt take charge, but the palate moves quickly to light thanksgiving gravy and buttery vanilla with sage. Light sandalwood and coconut roll to a finish of honeysuckle, cream, and a hint of cut grass.

Finish

A delightful diversion from your typical Scotch fair, it has its own complex profile that draws none of its characteristics from standards like sherry or peat. Nor does the bourbon barrel drive the flavor. Instead, the use of the bere barley adds an unusual cereal creaminess while maintaining a fresh, vegetal and citrus vibe. If you have a friend who is a Scotch collector, this would make a great gift to add some depth of new flavor to their collection.

The Bottom Line

Whisky Review: Bruichladdich Bere Barley 2013 delivers the goods. It is well-made, genuinely enjoyable, and at $139.99 represents solid value for what you are getting. I would happily buy this again.
