There are distilleries that shout from the rooftops, and then there's Tomatin — a Highland operation that has quietly been turning out excellent whisky for years without demanding your attention. The Tomatin 12 Year Old is their flagship expression, and at £40.95, it sits in that sweet spot where quality meets accessibility. I've been recommending this bottle to friends who want to step beyond the usual suspects, and it hasn't let me down yet.

What makes this 12 year old interesting from a production standpoint is the dual cask maturation. You're getting spirit that's spent time in both ex-bourbon barrels and sherry casks before being married together and bottled at 43% ABV. That's a deliberate choice — the bourbon casks will contribute lighter, sweeter vanilla and cereal notes, while the sherry influence rounds things out with dried fruit and a richer body. It's a classic Highland approach, and the 12 years of maturation gives enough time for those two wood influences to properly integrate rather than compete with each other.

At 43%, Tomatin have bottled this just above the legal minimum of 40%, which gives it a touch more weight and texture than some of its competitors at this price point. It's not cask strength by any means, but it doesn't feel thin or watered down either. There's enough substance here to stand up in a glass on its own.

Tasting Notes

I'd encourage you to approach this one with an open mind. The combination of bourbon and sherry cask maturation in a Highland context typically delivers a profile that balances orchard fruits and vanilla sweetness against something a bit deeper and more spiced from the sherry wood. At 12 years old, the spirit has had enough time to mellow and take on genuine cask character rather than just raw oak. Pour it, give it five minutes to open up, and pay attention to how it develops — dual-cask whiskies often shift in the glass as they breathe.

The Verdict

I'm giving the Tomatin 12 an 8 out of 10. For under £45, this is a Highland single malt that punches well above its price bracket. The dual cask approach gives it a complexity you don't always find at this level, and the 43% ABV shows a distillery that cares enough to give their whisky a bit of extra breathing room. If you're tired of reaching for the same two or three entry-level malts, Tomatin 12 deserves a permanent spot on your shelf. It's honest whisky — well made, well priced, and genuinely enjoyable to drink.

Best Served

This is a versatile dram. Neat with a few drops of water is the way to really appreciate what the dual cask maturation is doing, but it also makes a brilliant Old Fashioned. The sherry cask influence gives it enough body and dried fruit character to stand up to the bitters and sugar without getting lost. Use a good orange peel garnish — the citrus oils play beautifully against that bourbon-cask sweetness. For a weeknight pour, a single cube of ice opens it up nicely without drowning it.
