Twenty-one years is a significant age for any single malt, and for Tobermory — a distillery that has endured multiple closures throughout its history — it represents a particular achievement. The 21 Year Old is the most mature standard expression from Mull's only distillery, finished in oloroso sherry casks after initial maturation in bourbon wood.
The extended ageing has produced a whisky of genuine sophistication. The bourbon base provides structure and vanilla sweetness; the oloroso finish adds dried fruit, nut, and warm spice. At 46.3% and non-chill filtered, the specification lets the spirit's natural oiliness and maritime character come through unimpeded.
The nose is rich and mature: dried fruit, dark toffee, orange peel, polished wood, and a gentle coastal influence. The palate is full-bodied — stewed fruit, chocolate, coffee, gentle spice, and the distinctive Tobermory maritime salinity that years of harbour-side maturation have deepened and concentrated.
The finish is long, with dried fruit, oak, and a lingering warmth. It is a whisky that justifies its age statement and its price — twenty-one years of patience rewarded with depth, complexity, and character. Tobermory may not be the most famous island distillery, but at this age, it stands alongside the best.
