First Impressions
Tamnavulin Double Cask is the expression that re-introduced the distillery to the single malt world in 2016, and it has since become one of the top-selling single malts in UK supermarkets.
Distillery & Heritage
Tamnavulin — Gaelic for 'mill on the hill' — sits in the Livet valley in the heart of Speyside. Founded in 1966 and part of Whyte & Mackay since 1993, it was largely a blending malt for decades, falling silent in 1995 and reopening in 2007. The 2016 Double Cask launch marked its formal return as a single malt brand.
Tasting Notes in Detail
The nose is classic easy-going Speyside: honey, vanilla, orchard fruit, toasted almond and a lift of raisin from the sherry finish. The palate is soft and sweet — baked apple, toffee, light sherry fruit and a gentle spice. The finish is short to medium, clean and gently sweet.
Verdict
For the money, Double Cask is remarkable. Hard to beat on pounds-per-pleasure.
