First Impressions
Tamdhu doesn't do half-measures with sherry, and the 15 Year Old is the distillery's argument fully made. The nose is unmistakably sherried — Oloroso-led, nutty, with that characteristic Christmas-cake depth — but there's a finesse to it that lifts it above many sherry bombs.
Distillery & Heritage
Founded in 1897 on the banks of the Spey at Knockando, Tamdhu was for decades a quiet workhorse for The Famous Grouse blend. Mothballed in 2010, it was rescued in 2011 by Ian Macleod Distillers, who relaunched it with a clear philosophy: every drop matures exclusively in sherry-seasoned oak casks, predominantly Oloroso, sourced through their own cooperage relationships in Spain. The 15 represents a sweet spot in their core range — old enough to show sherry depth, young enough to retain Tamdhu's softer Speyside character.
Tasting Notes in Detail
The nose layers Oloroso sherry, walnuts, and dark chocolate orange, with toffee and dried apricot beneath. A whisper of leather adds a mature note. The palate is rich but never cloying — Christmas cake, hazelnuts, espresso, and black cherry, with warming spice building through the mid-palate. Bottled at 46% non-chill-filtered, it has weight and texture. The finish is long and nutty with lingering dark fruit.
Verdict
If you love sherried Speyside whisky and want something more refined than the heavy hitters but more characterful than the entry level, this is a near-perfect pour. Excellent value at the price.
