First Impressions
Strathisla is a name whisky enthusiasts know well even if they've never tasted the single malt — its picture-postcard pagodas adorn every Chivas Regal box. Pour the 12 and you immediately recognise the DNA of those famous blends: honeyed, fruity, gently sherried. This is classic Speyside in a glass.
Distillery & Heritage
Founded in 1786 in Keith, Strathisla is the oldest continuously operating distillery in the Scottish Highlands. Acquired by Chivas Brothers in 1950, it has long been considered the spiritual home of Chivas Regal — the heart malt around which the blend is built. Single malt bottlings have always been comparatively scarce, since the bulk of production goes to blending. The 12 Year Old, however, has remained a steady ambassador in the official range, often only available at the distillery shop or through specialist retailers.
Tasting Notes in Detail
The nose is quintessential Speyside: honey, orchard fruit, toasted almond, dried herbs, with a light sherry note in the background. The palate matches the nose's promise — honeyed sweetness, baked apple, raisin, hazelnut and cinnamon, with gentle oak structure. At 40% it's a touch reserved, but the flavours are clear and well-integrated. The finish is medium, sweet, with lingering nuts and orchard fruit.
Verdict
A genuinely lovely traditional Speysider that rewards quiet contemplation. Not the boldest dram on the shelf, but its history and craft justify the modest premium. Essential for anyone interested in the building blocks of Chivas.
