Springbank is the last distillery in Scotland to carry out every stage of production on site — malting, distilling, maturing, and bottling — and the 10 Year Old is where that commitment to self-sufficiency finds its purest expression. It is the distillery's flagship, and for many drinkers, the benchmark against which all other Campbeltown malts are measured.
The whisky is a vatting of 60% bourbon cask and 40% sherry cask spirit, bottled at 46% without chill filtration. Springbank's unusual two-and-a-half-times distillation — neither the double of most Scottish distilleries nor the triple of Auchentoshan — gives the spirit a distinctive character that sits between the oily weight of a pot still whisky and the lightness of a column still.
The nose is a compelling balance of opposites: fresh honeycomb, vanilla fudge, hazelnut praline, and golden syrup against earthy peat smoke, dried orange zest, and white pepper. The palate is bold and rewarding — honeycomb straight from the hive, gentle peat smoke with a soft sweetness and hints of salinity, creamy milk chocolate, and robust malted cereals. It is a whisky that delivers complexity without complication.
The finish is long and warming, with peat smoke drawing out the length and adding a pleasant dryness, while sweet dried fruit and salty brine linger. Springbank 10 is one of the few whiskies that genuinely deserves the word 'classic'. It has earned its cult following through consistency, character, and an absolute refusal to compromise.
