Swedish whisky remains one of the most quietly compelling corners of the single malt world, and Spirit of Hven has been at the forefront of that conversation for some time now. The Mizar — part of their Seven Stars series, this being No.6:1 — is a non-age-statement single malt bottled at a very respectable 45% ABV. At £90.95, it sits in that interesting middle ground: too considered to be an impulse purchase, but not so lofty that it demands reverence before you've even cracked the seal. I think that's rather the point.
Spirit of Hven operates from the island of Ven in the Öresund strait, a location that lends itself to genuine maritime influence — not the marketing kind, the real kind. Their approach to whisky-making has always struck me as meticulous and unhurried, with a focus on organic grain and their own floor maltings. The Seven Stars series takes its names from the stars of Ursa Major, each release representing a distinct expression of the distillery's character. Mizar, the sixth in the sequence, continues that tradition of individuality.
What I find compelling about this whisky is its confidence at 45%. There's a school of thought that NAS whiskies need cask strength to prove their worth — Spirit of Hven clearly disagrees. This is a whisky that has been brought to a strength the distillery believes shows it at its best, and having spent time with it, I'm inclined to agree. It carries itself with a weight and presence that belies the lack of an age statement on the label.
Tasting Notes
I'll be straightforward here: I want to let this whisky speak for itself rather than impose a flavour map that might set the wrong expectations. What I will say is that Spirit of Hven's house style tends toward richness and complexity, with their use of smaller casks and careful wood management creating whiskies that punch well above what you might expect from a relatively young distillery. The 45% ABV gives it enough backbone to deliver without overwhelming, and it opens up beautifully with a few minutes in the glass.
The Verdict
At 8 out of 10, this is a whisky I'd recommend without hesitation to anyone curious about what's happening beyond Scotland's borders. Spirit of Hven has earned its reputation through substance rather than spectacle, and the Mizar is a fine example of why. It's not trying to be a Scottish single malt — it's something distinctly its own, shaped by Scandinavian climate, organic Swedish grain, and a distillery philosophy that prioritises craft over volume. The price point is fair for what you're getting: a thoughtfully made, distinctive single malt from one of Europe's most interesting small producers. If you've been meaning to explore Nordic whisky but haven't known where to start, this is a very good place.
Best Served
Pour it neat at room temperature and give it five minutes to breathe. If you find the initial pour a touch tight, add no more than a teaspoon of still water — it tends to open up considerably. This is a contemplative dram, one that rewards patience and attention. Save the Highball for something less interesting.
