First Impressions
Speyburn 10 — from the distillery that raced to beat Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee deadline. Founded 1897 in Rothes, designed by the legendary Charles Doig — the architect who created the iconic pagoda-roofed kiln. Workers famously laboured in freezing conditions with no windows or doors yet fitted to produce the first spirit before the year ended.
Affordable Single Malt
Matured in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry American oak casks. Bottled at 40%. At approximately £25, one of the most affordable 10-year-old single malts on the market. Gold medal at the 2006 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
Tasting
Bright and fresh nose with lemon, apple, and honey. Light, honeyed palate with orchard fruits, oats, and a distinctive herbal character. The finish is gently oaky and grassy. Not complex, but clean and well-made.
The Verdict
Speyburn 10 earns a 6.5 — outstanding value for a 10-year-old single malt at £25. It won't challenge complex Speysiders at twice the price, but it's clean, honest, and well-made. A light, easy-drinking, summery Speyside that punches above its price point. The worker-without-windows heritage adds charm.
