Tasting Notes

Nose

Caramel, vanilla, a gentle spice. The desert aging adds a warmth and concentration. Beneath the sweetness, dried apple, toasted oak and a touch of cinnamon. Approachable and well-balanced.

Palate

Sweet and spicy — caramel, vanilla, a gentle rye kick. The desert maturation adds more flavour than similarly aged bourbons from cooler climates. A touch of brown sugar and a gentle oak warmth mid-palate. At 46%, it has good body.

Finish

Medium, with caramel and a gentle, spicy warmth.

Smoke Wagon Small Batch is the more accessible sibling of the cult Uncut Unfiltered expression — same MGP-sourced bourbon, same Nevada desert aging, but bottled at a more approachable 92 proof. The Small Batch designation means each release draws from a small number of barrels, adding variability and character that mass-produced bourbons at this price cannot match.

The desert aging influence is noticeable even at this lower proof. The extreme Nevada heat — summer temperatures regularly exceeding 45°C — accelerates maturation, extracting more flavour from the wood in less time. The result is a bourbon that tastes more mature than its age would suggest, with a depth of caramel and oak that competes with more expensive offerings.

Smoke Wagon Small Batch is one of the better bourbons available at its price point. The desert-aging concept gives it a genuine point of difference, and the quality of the MGP distillate ensures a solid foundation. For drinkers who have discovered the Uncut Unfiltered and want an everyday counterpart, or for anyone seeking a well-made bourbon with more character than the standard shelf offerings, Small Batch delivers reliably.
