Port Charlotte PC10, bearing the Gaelic subtitle Tro Na Linntean, is exactly the kind of Islay single malt that reminds you why this small island commands such outsized respect in the whisky world. Bottled at a formidable 59.8% ABV and carrying a price tag of £275, this is not a casual purchase — it is a statement of intent from both producer and buyer. I have spent considerable time with this bottle, and it has earned its place on my shelf.

What to Expect

Port Charlotte sits firmly in the heavily peated camp of Islay single malts, and at cask strength, it does not apologise for that identity. The PC series has built a reputation among peat enthusiasts for delivering smoke with genuine complexity rather than brute force, and the PC10 continues that tradition. At nearly 60% ABV, this is a whisky that demands patience. Straight from the bottle it can be imposing — there is real weight and density here — but give it time to breathe and it begins to open up in ways that reward the attentive drinker.

As a NAS release, the focus is squarely on character rather than age. The "PC" designation has long signified a particular house style: muscular, maritime-inflected peat with enough underlying malt sweetness to keep things in balance. The Tro Na Linntean bottling carries that signature forward. What strikes me most is the confidence of the spirit at this strength. There is no sense that the high ABV is masking deficiencies — rather, it amplifies a core personality that is already fully formed.

At £275, this places itself in premium territory for an Islay single malt without an age statement. That said, Port Charlotte releases from this series have become increasingly sought-after on the secondary market, and the PC10 in particular holds genuine collectibility. Whether you are buying to drink or to hold, there is value here — though I would strongly encourage drinking it. Whisky this well-constructed deserves to be experienced, not displayed.

The Verdict

I am giving the Port Charlotte PC10 Tro Na Linntean an 8 out of 10. This is a serious, cask-strength Islay single malt that delivers on the promise of its pedigree. The high ABV is handled with real assurance, and the overall package — presentation, strength, and the reputation of the Port Charlotte line — justifies the investment. It falls just short of the highest marks only because the price point sets expectations at a level where every detail is scrutinised, and without confirmed provenance details, I hold a fraction back. But make no mistake: this is excellent whisky, and it sits comfortably among the better heavily peated Islay malts I have reviewed this year.

Best Served

At 59.8% ABV, this is a whisky that benefits enormously from a few drops of water — I would suggest starting neat to appreciate the full cask-strength experience, then adding water gradually until you find the point where the spirit opens without losing its backbone. A good-quality spring water and a Glencairn glass are all you need. This is not a cocktail malt. Give it the respect of simplicity and it will repay you generously.
