First Impressions
Celt sits in Penderyn's Dragon Range alongside Myth and Legend. It's not a peated distillate — instead, ex-Islay casks lend Penderyn's clean Welsh spirit a whiff of campfire and brine.
Distillery & Heritage
Penderyn distils in the foothills of the Brecon Beacons using its signature Faraday still, which produces spirit at extraordinarily high strength. The result is a delicate, fruity new make that takes cask flavour readily. Celt matures in ex-bourbon barrels before finishing in casks that previously held heavily peated Islay single malt.
Tasting Notes in Detail
The nose offers Penderyn's trademark vanilla and orchard fruit, then a curl of soft wood smoke drifts through. On the palate the peat is gentle rather than aggressive — think coastal bonfire rather than Laphroaig — sitting alongside toffee apple, brine and a flick of white pepper. The finish lingers with dry smoke and salt.
Verdict
A beautifully judged introduction to peat for Penderyn fans, and a clever bridge whisky for Islay drinkers curious about Welsh malt.
