First Impressions
Brilliance is the unpeated entry point to the Paul John range and a brilliant introduction (the name fits) to what tropical maturation does to malt whisky. It smells like a sun-warmed orchard with a milk chocolate bar melting beside it.
Distillery & Heritage
John Distilleries built its single malt distillery in Goa in 2008, drawing on the same indigenous six-row barley used historically across the subcontinent. Master distiller Michael D'Souza ages the spirit in ex-bourbon casks in underground cellars near the coast, where humidity and heat coax remarkable depth out of relatively young whisky. Brilliance launched internationally in 2012 and quickly racked up awards.
Tasting Notes in Detail
The nose is generous and inviting — honey, ripe mango, vanilla, milk chocolate and toasted almond. The palate is creamy and sweet with caramel, banana and baked apple over a gentle oak frame and a flicker of spice. The finish is medium-long, warming, with honey and cocoa carrying through.
Verdict
Easy-drinking but never simple, and an absolute steal at the price. If you have not yet explored Indian single malt, Brilliance is the perfect place to start.
