Beeswax, dried apricot, malted barley, light floral and a hint of nutmeg.

Palate

Rounded and waxy, honeyed orchard fruit, soft oak, gentle spice.

Finish

Long, mellow, with toasted almond and dried fruit.

Miltonduff stands a few miles south of Elgin, on land once belonging to Pluscarden Abbey, where the monks of the thirteenth century are said to have brewed beer from the waters of the Black Burn. The distillery itself was founded in 1824, in the first wave of legal distilling that followed the Excise Act of 1823, and has operated almost continuously ever since.

Hiram Walker bought it in 1936, the same year they acquired Glenburgie, and the two distilleries together became the twin pillars of the Ballantine's blend. Like Glenburgie, Miltonduff briefly housed a pair of Lomond stills — installed in 1964 to produce a heavier malt called Mosstowie — which were removed in 1981.

The 18-year-old, released as part of Chivas Brothers' Distillery Reserve and later official ranges, shows the distillery at maturity. It carries the house signature of soft fruit and waxy malt, but at eighteen years and a sensible 46% there is real depth: dried apricot, beeswax, a quiet orchard sweetness, all held together by the kind of unhurried oak only long ageing in good casks delivers.

It is not a showy whisky. Miltonduff has never been marketed with the swagger of its Speyside neighbours, and an evening with the 18 makes clear why none of that has ever been necessary. The spirit speaks for itself, and what it says is patient, generous and quietly compelling.
