First Impressions
Mars Shinshu sits at 798 metres in the Central Japanese Alps, the highest whisky distillery in Japan, beneath the imposing Mt Komagatake from which this expression takes its name. The cool mountain air and dramatic temperature swings shape a spirit that is fresh, bright and unmistakably alpine.
Distillery & Heritage
Hombo Shuzo's Mars distillery first made whisky in 1985 under master distiller Kiichiro Iwai — a man who, fascinatingly, taught Masataka Taketsuru and designed the original Yamazaki stills. Mars fell silent in 1992 and was revived in 2011, and Komagatake has since become one of the most sought-after Japanese single malts at a sensible price.
Tasting Notes in Detail
The nose is delicate and fruit-driven — pear, green apple, vanilla and a wisp of smoke. The palate carries soft orchard fruit, malt biscuit and citrus zest over a clean oak base, with faint herbal undertones. The finish is medium length, clean and gently peppery.
Verdict
A graceful, terroir-driven Japanese single malt that rewards patient sipping. One of the best ways to taste what makes Mars different.
