Mannochmore distillery was built in 1971 next to its older sister, Glenlossie, near Elgin in Speyside. Both serve the Diageo blending operation, and both produce light, clean spirits designed to complement rather than dominate a blend. The Flora & Fauna 12 Year Old, which debuted in 1992, remains the first and essentially only official bottling.
The whisky is clean, elegant and refreshing — adjectives that describe both its strengths and its limitations. The orchard fruit, honeysuckle and gentle spice create a pleasant drinking experience, but the deliberate lightness means there is limited depth to explore. This is a spirit designed for blending, and while it acquits itself respectably as a single malt, it does not pretend to be something it was never intended to be.
Mannochmore 12 will appeal to drinkers who prefer their Speyside light, fresh and unchallenging. At its price, it competes with more characterful alternatives, but the Flora & Fauna presentation gives it a curiosity value that may justify the investment for collectors and completists. A competent, well-made Speyside malt from a distillery content with its supporting role.
