SE4xPR5 was released in 2020 as the inaugural Maker's Mark Wood Finishing Series bottling, a project that director of innovation Jane Bowie had been developing for years. The release name codes the two stave profiles used: Seared French Cuvée number 4 and Pressed French Spice number 5, both proprietary finishing staves originally developed for the Private Selection programme.
The combination was chosen to amplify two characteristics at once — the rich vanilla-and-caramel sweetness of the seared cuvée and the warm, dried-fruit spice of the pressed spice profile. Cask strength Maker's Mark was fitted with the staves and rested for nine weeks in the distillery's limestone cellar, the cool soak that has become the signature of the series.
Bottled at cask strength and unfiltered, SE4xPR5 immediately set the tone for everything that would follow — restrained, balanced, and deeply rooted in the wheated house style. It also proved that Maker's Mark, long seen as one of the most consistent and least experimental of the major Kentucky distillers, had a serious appetite for thoughtful innovation.
Bottles are now hard to find, and prices on the secondary market reflect its standing as the genesis of one of bourbon's most respected limited series.
