Tasting Notes

Nose

Oak, caramel corn, vanilla fondant, dried dark fruit, leather, roasted nuts, citrus peels and baking spice. Sweet pears and cherries are dominant, with dark caramel, brown sugar and tart orange citrus. Quite warm and full.

Palate

Dark cherries, light toffee and brown sugar, with tart orange peel and tannins appearing quickly. Sweet at first sip before transitioning to spicy, oak-filled mid-palate. Burnt caramel, vanilla, butterscotch, toasted nuts. The 101 proof turns up the volume on everything familiar about Maker's.

Finish

Somewhat dry — dry wood, rising black pepper and tannins, lingering tart orange citrus and barrel char. More assertive than standard Maker's.

Maker's Mark 101 takes the Loretto distillery's wheated bourbon — 60% corn, 26% red winter wheat, 14% malted barley — and presents it at 101 proof (50.5% ABV). The additional strength over the standard 90-proof expression gives the familiar Maker's character more intensity and a richer, creamier mouthfeel without fundamentally changing its identity.

The wheated mash bill responds well to the higher proof. The red winter wheat's natural softness prevents the additional alcohol from becoming harsh, and the classic Maker's sweetness — caramel, cherry, vanilla — gains body and conviction. The oak influence becomes more assertive, adding tannin and a dry spiciness that the gentler standard proof smooths away.

Critical reception has been divided. Some reviewers find the 101 a significant improvement — bigger, bolder and more robust — while others note it remains somewhat one-dimensional compared to other bourbons at the same proof point. Both perspectives have merit. Maker's Mark 101 is the best version of Maker's Mark for drinkers who want more from the familiar recipe without venturing into the more experimental Maker's 46 or Private Selection territory. A simple, effective upgrade.
