There are moments in whisky where the liquid and the vessel compete for your attention in equal measure. The Macallan M Decanter, 2022 Edition, is one of those occasions. At £5,000, this Speyside single malt sits firmly in the realm of luxury spirits — a category where expectation runs dangerously high and the margin for disappointment is razor-thin. Having spent time with this bottle, I can say it largely justifies its ambition, though not without a few caveats worth discussing honestly.

The M Decanter range has always positioned itself at the pinnacle of the Macallan portfolio. This 2022 edition arrives as a no-age-statement release bottled at 45.9% ABV — a strength that signals confidence in the liquid itself. NAS expressions at this price point are a deliberate choice: the blending team is asking you to trust their craft over the comfort of a number on the label. At 45.9%, it sits in that sweet spot above the standard 40-43% range, suggesting they wanted to preserve character without pushing into cask-strength territory. It is a measured decision, and one I respect.

As a Speyside single malt, you know roughly what world you are entering — fruit-forward, sherry-influenced, with a richness that the region does better than almost anywhere else in Scotland. The M Decanter has always leaned into that identity, and the 2022 edition carries that DNA forward. This is not a whisky trying to reinvent itself. It knows exactly what it is.

Tasting Notes

I have not published formal tasting notes for this edition at this time. What I will say is that at 45.9% ABV and with the pedigree of the M Decanter series behind it, this is a whisky built for concentrated, contemplative drinking. Expect the kind of depth and weight that Speyside single malts at this level are known for. I will update this section with detailed nose, palate, and finish notes once I have given this expression the full structured assessment it deserves.

The Verdict

At 7.9 out of 10, the Macallan M Decanter 2022 Edition earns a strong recommendation — with the understanding that context matters enormously here. This is a genuinely impressive single malt. The 45.9% ABV is well-chosen, the NAS approach works in its favour by freeing the blending team from age constraints, and the overall presentation is, frankly, extraordinary. The crystal decanter alone is a piece of design worth admiring.

Where I hold back that final point or two is on value. Five thousand pounds is a significant sum, and at this price you are paying for more than liquid alone. You are paying for the decanter, the brand prestige, and the collector appeal. The whisky inside is excellent — but I have tasted Speyside malts at a fraction of this price that have moved me just as deeply. If you are buying the M Decanter as an experience, as a centrepiece, as something to mark an occasion that genuinely matters, it delivers. If you are buying it purely for what is in the glass, the calculus shifts.

That said, this is a positive review for good reason. The Macallan M Decanter 2022 Edition is a serious whisky made with evident care, bottled at a strength that respects the drinker, and presented in a way that few other producers can match. It is worth buying — just make sure you are buying it for the right reasons.

Best Served

Neat, in a wide-bowled glass, at room temperature. If you wish to open it up slightly, a few drops of still water will do the job — no more than that. At 45.9%, it is approachable enough without dilution, but water can coax out additional layers. This is an after-dinner whisky, best enjoyed slowly with nothing else competing for your attention. A Highball would be an act of vandalism at this price point.
