The Macallan M sits at the pinnacle of the distillery's 1824 Series, a range organised not by age statement but by natural colour. It is a first-fill sherry-matured single malt presented in a Lalique crystal decanter created by Fabien Baron, the New York creative director best known for his work with Madonna, Calvin Klein and Vogue Paris. Baron's brief was to design a vessel worthy of holding what The Macallan considers its defining style.
The whisky itself is drawn from a small selection of hand-picked sherry-seasoned European and American oak casks from the distillery's Speyside warehouses. The Macallan has long staked its reputation on the quality of its casks, and M is pitched as a distillation of that philosophy — sherry wood, colour and aroma in their most concentrated form.
On the nose it is unmistakably Macallan: raisin, fig, polished antique furniture and sweet orange. The palate is dense and layered, with dried fruit giving way to ginger, clove and dark chocolate, and the oak holding everything in place. The finish carries the spice forward without heat, drying slowly into tannin and leather.
M was first released in 2013 and has appeared in several editions since, including the record-setting Constantine decanter sold at auction in Hong Kong. It is a whisky made as much for display as for drinking, but those fortunate enough to pour it find a dram that justifies the ceremony.
