First Impressions
Pour a measure of Macallan 15 Double Cask and you can immediately tell this is a step up from the 12. The colour is a glowing amber, and the nose lifts straight out of the glass with that signature Macallan fruit compote — soft pear, toffee and Manuka honey. It feels elegant and composed, even at a modest 43% ABV.
Distillery & Heritage
Macallan needs little introduction — the Easter Elchies estate above the Spey is one of the most famous addresses in whisky. The Double Cask range, launched in 2016, was designed to bridge Macallan's traditional European-oak Sherry Oak style with the lighter American-oak Fine Oak profile. Both cask types are seasoned with Oloroso sherry in Jerez before being filled, giving the whisky a balanced sherry character without the heavy tannins of pure European oak.
Tasting Notes in Detail
The palate brings dried fruits, a hint of ginger and Irish breakfast tea, with fragrant oak and orange zest filling the mid-palate. Nutmeg and a curious soursop note (somewhere between dried pineapple and overripe banana) appear before a slightly oily finish carries the dram out — long for 43% ABV, with the sherry oak gently lingering.
Verdict
If you're looking for a sipping Macallan that delivers genuine value within the core range, the 15 Double Cask is the sweet spot. More elegant and nuanced than the 12, without the eye-watering price tag of the 18, it's a beautifully balanced Speyside that rewards slow sipping.
