First Impressions
Longmorn has always been the blender's distillery of choice, and one sip of the 16 explains why. This is Speyside malt in its most generous, tropical mood — a dram that fills the glass with orchard and exotic fruit from the first pour.
Distillery and Heritage
Longmorn was founded in 1894 near Elgin by John Duff, who had already built nearby Glenlossie. The distillery quickly earned a reputation for producing one of the most richly flavoured malts in Speyside, and its spirit has long been a cornerstone of Chivas Regal. Owned today by Chivas Brothers, Longmorn has historically released few official single malts, making each bottling of interest. The 16 Year Old, launched in 2007, replaced the long-running 15 Year Old and is bottled at a confident 48%.
Tasting Notes in Detail
The distillery's fabled tropical fruit character is front and centre — pineapple, peach and banana layered over a creamy malted backbone. The 48% strength gives the whisky real presence on the palate without demanding water. A drop, however, brings out vanilla and milk chocolate.
Verdict
A classic Speysider from one of Scotland's most undersung distilleries. Essential drinking for anyone who thinks they know the region.
