If Our Barley is Lochlea's everyday voice, the Seasonal Series is where the distillery steps into lyricism. Sowing Edition belongs to spring — the moment when the Ayrshire fields are turned and the year's barley is cast into the soil — and the dram captures that hopeful, earthen brightness beautifully.
Matured entirely in first-fill bourbon barrels and bottled at a generous 48%, Sowing arrives in the glass pale gold and eager. The nose is all American oak exuberance at first: lemon zest, vanilla pod, toasted coconut and a faint dusting of icing sugar. Then something more grounded emerges — freshly turned earth, green barley stalks, the scent of a ploughed field after rain.
On the palate it is bright and generous. Sweet malted barley leads, followed by honeyed lemon, a surprising flicker of ripe mango, and then the creamy oak that first-fill bourbon does so well. The higher strength lends weight without heat, and the texture is almost buttery.
The finish is where Sowing really earns its keep: long, warmly spiced with white pepper and a touch of clove, and threaded through with a citrus glow that refuses to fade. It is a whisky that feels awake — the distillery's own description of spring given liquid form.
For drinkers who already know Our Barley and want to see what Lochlea can do with a tighter cask brief and a higher ABV, Sowing Edition is a small masterclass. It is also a lovely reminder that seasonal whisky, done with conviction, can be more than marketing — it can be a postcard from a specific week on a specific farm.
