Tasting Notes

Nose

Fresh-cut grass, orchard apple, pear drops, a sprig of jasmine and a light thread of honey.

Palate

Delicate and clean. Green apple, barley sugar, lemon zest, a touch of almond and faint white pepper.

Finish

Medium length, fresh, gently floral. Apple skin and a whisper of malt.

Linkwood has always been one of those distilleries admired more by blenders than by marketers. Built in 1821 just outside Elgin, it spent most of the twentieth century feeding Johnnie Walker and other Diageo blends, and official single malt bottlings have been scarce. Gordon & MacPhail — also based in Elgin, a short drive from the distillery — has bottled Linkwood for decades under its Distillery Labels range, and for many drinkers the G&M versions are the definitive single malt Linkwoods.

The 15 Year Old is the workhorse of that range. Bottled at 43% ABV from a mix of refill casks, it is priced in the sensible middle ground and stocked widely across UK specialists. Nothing about it is flashy. The appeal lies in its straightforward presentation of a classic Speyside character — clean, floral, orchard-fruited — without the heavy sherry dressing that dominates so many modern releases.

Linkwood's reputation for producing an unusually floral spirit comes partly from the distillery's insistence on traditional practices; for a long time the old stillhouse was kept deliberately cluttered, cobwebs and all, in the belief that any change would affect the spirit. That level of superstition has softened since the site was modernised, but the house character remains — light, grassy, faintly perfumed, and well suited to refill oak.

At fifteen years old the whisky has had time to round out without losing its freshness. This is not a dram for drinkers who want impact, but for anyone interested in the subtler end of Speyside — or in understanding why blenders have always valued Linkwood — it is an honest and well-judged introduction.
