Laphroaig needs no introduction from me, nor from anyone who has spent even a passing afternoon with Islay malts. It is, for better or worse, the distillery that draws a line in the sand — you either embrace the medicinal, coastal intensity or you walk away. The PX Cask expression, bottled at a litre and at a robust 48% ABV, represents one of the more intriguing propositions in their current range: take that famously uncompromising spirit and finish it in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. On paper, it sounds like a collision. In the glass, it is something rather more considered than that.

This is a no-age-statement release, which in Laphroaig's case I find less concerning than with many distilleries. Their house character is so deeply embedded — that coastal, phenolic backbone — that even younger components tend to carry conviction. The PX cask finish adds a layer of dried fruit sweetness and richness that plays against the smoke rather than trying to mask it. At 48%, there is enough strength here to let those competing flavours wrestle properly without either side conceding too easily.

What to Expect

If you know Laphroaig, you know what the foundation will be: peat smoke, iodine, that distinctive coastal character that has defined Islay single malt for generations. The Pedro Ximénez influence should bring dried fig, raisin, and dark treacle notes into the conversation — a sweetness that is dense and sticky rather than light or floral. The interplay between heavy peat and sherry sweetness is a combination that, when handled well, produces some of the most complex and rewarding drams available at this price point. At 48% ABV without chill filtration concerns at this strength, expect a full-bodied, oily texture that rewards patience.

The litre format is worth noting. At £113, the per-measure cost works out rather favourably compared to many 70cl competitors in the premium Islay category. It is not an insignificant outlay, but you are getting genuine substance for the money — both in volume and in what is happening inside that bottle.

The Verdict

I have long maintained that the best cask finishes do not simply add a new flavour — they reveal something already latent in the spirit. The PX Cask expression takes Laphroaig's considerable intensity and gives it a darker, richer frame. It is not a gentle whisky. It never pretends to be. But there is a generosity here, a willingness to offer both power and sweetness in the same breath, that I find genuinely appealing. At 48%, it sits in that ideal range where strength serves the flavour rather than bullying it. For anyone who already appreciates Laphroaig's character and wants to explore how it responds to sherried influence, this is a compelling bottle. For those new to heavy peat, it may actually serve as a more approachable entry point than the standard 10-year-old — the PX sweetness softens the landing without dulling the impact. A confident 8.1 out of 10, and one I would happily keep on the shelf for regular revisiting.

Best Served

Neat, at room temperature, with five minutes of air in the glass before your first sip. If you find the 48% needs taming, a few drops of still water will open the sweetness considerably — but I would urge you to try it at full strength first. This is a whisky that rewards boldness. On a cold evening, a simple Highball with quality soda and a strip of orange peel makes for a surprisingly elegant long drink, though purists may raise an eyebrow. I will not judge.
