Tasting Notes

Nose

Intense peat, iodine, seaweed. A wave of maritime medicinal peat that defines Laphroaig — bandages, TCP, bonfire smoke on a salt-sprayed shore. Beneath the peat, malt, vanilla and a surprising sweetness. At cask strength, the full force of Islay hits before the glass reaches the lips.

Palate

Massive and peaty — smoke, brine, a medicinal intensity balanced by a surprising sweetness. The cask strength amplifies everything — the peat is more intense, the malt sweeter, the maritime character more vivid. Mid-palate brings charred oak, dark toffee and a savoury umami depth. Water reveals vanilla and citrus beneath the smoke.

Finish

Very long, with peat smoke and maritime character sustaining in waves of smoke and sweetness.

Laphroaig Cask Strength takes the distillery's 10 Year Old and presents it without dilution — typically between 56% and 60% depending on the batch. It is Laphroaig at its most uncompromising, and for devotees of the most divisive distillery on Islay, it is the definitive expression. The peat, the iodine, the medicinal character that inspires both fanatical devotion and visceral rejection — all are amplified to maximum volume.

Released in annual batches, each Cask Strength varies slightly in ABV and character, but the core identity remains constant: intense maritime peat, a surprisingly sweet malt backbone, and a complexity that rewards both neat sipping and careful dilution. At cask strength, the malt sweetness that the standard 10 Year Old only hints at becomes a genuine counterweight to the peat, creating a more balanced and nuanced whisky than the lower-strength version.

Laphroaig Cask Strength is one of the finest peated whiskies available, and at its price — barely more than the standard 10 Year Old — it is extraordinary value. The additional strength transforms the Laphroaig experience, adding depth, sweetness and intensity that the diluted version cannot match. For peat lovers, it is essential. For the curious, it is the fullest possible expression of what Islay peat tastes like. Approach with respect, dilute with care, and prepare to be converted or confirmed in your prejudices.
