There are expressions that divide a room, and then there is Laphroaig at cask strength. Batch 013, bottled in 2021, arrives at a commanding 57.9% ABV — the kind of proof that demands your attention before you have even brought the glass to your nose. At ten years old and drawn straight from the cask without dilution, this is Laphroaig in its most uncompromising form, and I think that is precisely the point.

Islay single malts carry a reputation that precedes them, and Laphroaig sits at the more assertive end of that spectrum. The cask strength programme has built a dedicated following since its inception, with each batch offering a slightly different snapshot of the distillery's character at full power. Batch 013 continues that tradition. What you are getting here is not a whisky that has been softened or rounded off for mass appeal — this is raw, undiluted spirit that has spent a decade maturing and is presented exactly as it was found.

At 57.9%, the ABV is muscular but not unusual for this series. Batches have varied over the years, and 013 sits comfortably within the expected range. The beauty of cask strength, of course, is that you control the experience. A few drops of water will open it up considerably, and I would encourage even seasoned drinkers to experiment rather than treat the neat pour as some kind of endurance test. There is no medal for scorched taste buds.

What to Expect

If you know Laphroaig's standard 10 Year Old, imagine that profile with the volume turned up significantly. The coastal, medicinal character that defines this distillery is amplified at full strength, and the additional intensity brings texture and weight that the 43% expression simply cannot deliver. This is an Islay single malt that does not ask permission — it announces itself.

At £72.95, it represents genuinely strong value for a cask strength single malt of this calibre. Many distilleries now charge well north of £80 for comparable releases, and some have crept past £100. Laphroaig has kept this relatively accessible, which I respect.

The Verdict

Batch 013 is a confident, full-throated expression of what Laphroaig does well. It is not trying to be subtle, and it would be foolish to expect subtlety from it. What it delivers is intensity, presence, and genuine character at a price that does not feel exploitative. A score of 7.6 reflects a whisky that executes its brief with conviction — this is exactly what it sets out to be, and it does it well. It loses a fraction for the fact that, at this strength, it can be somewhat one-dimensional without water, but that is a minor quibble with what is otherwise a very satisfying dram.

Best Served

Neat with a few drops of good water is the way to go here. The reduction from 57.9% down to somewhere around 48-50% unlocks considerably more complexity and makes this a far more rewarding experience. A classic Islay Highball with quality soda also works surprisingly well on warmer days, though I suspect the purists will have words with me for suggesting it.
