First Impressions
Knob Creek 12 — the extension of Booker Noe's vision. Jim Beam's grandson became Master Distiller in 1960 and in 1992 created Knob Creek as part of his pioneering Small Batch Collection alongside Booker's, Baker's, and Basil Hayden's. His concept: pre-Prohibition-style bourbon, full strength, full flavour, patiently aged.
The Small Batch Pioneer
The 12 Year Old was first released as a limited edition in 2019, becoming permanent in 2020. 100 proof (50% ABV). It extends the Knob Creek philosophy with deeper oak character from the extra three years of aging. Competitive with Elijah Craig Barrel Proof and Russell's Reserve Single Barrel in quality-to-price ratio.
Tasting
Dense caramel and vanilla nose with dark cherry and roasted oak. The palate is more balanced than the 9 year — cherry licorice, candied orange peel, and oak in harmony. The finish is long with building spice and pleasant dryness. The 12 years add depth without bitterness.
The Verdict
Knob Creek 12 earns an 8.5 — Booker Noe's pre-Prohibition vision aged to perfection. At £58 and 100 proof, this is among the best value aged bourbons available. The extra three years over the 9 year old are worth every penny. A worthy tribute to the small batch pioneer.
