Kilkerran is the single malt from Glengyle distillery in Campbeltown, which was reopened in 2004 by J&A Mitchell — the same family that owns Springbank. The Kilkerran name was chosen because a Glengyle single malt already existed from a different, now-closed distillery. The 8 Year Old Cask Strength is part of the distillery's ongoing series of work-in-progress releases, each showing the spirit at different stages of maturation.
Eight years is young, but the Campbeltown character — maritime, briny, gently smoky — is already well-established. The cask strength presentation is key, giving the young spirit enough intensity to express its coastal identity with real conviction. The malt character is clean and well-defined, and the bourbon and sherry cask maturation adds sweetness and structure without overwhelming the spirit.
Kilkerran 8 Cask Strength is a fascinating snapshot of a young distillery coming of age. Each release shows the spirit developing and deepening, and the trajectory is clearly upward. As an affordable cask-strength Campbeltown malt, it offers remarkable value and genuine quality. Campbeltown's revival — led by Springbank and now supported by Kilkerran — is one of the most welcome stories in modern Scotch whisky, and this release demonstrates why.
