The Kilkerran 16 is the most mature age-stated expression from Glengyle distillery, and it represents a significant step up from the already excellent 12. Four extra years in wood have allowed the spirit to develop a complexity and roundness that the younger expression cannot match, while retaining the bright, citric character that defines Kilkerran.
Matured in a combination of bourbon and sherry casks, bottled at 46% without chill filtration or colouring. The cask combination is similar to the 12, but the longer maturation has allowed the sherry influence to integrate more fully with the spirit, producing a whisky that is simultaneously richer and more refined.
The nose is complex and inviting: honeyed malt, dried apricot, coconut, salted caramel, citrus peel, and a gentle maritime quality. The palate is full and layered — tropical fruit, butterscotch, ginger, toasted almond, dark chocolate, and the Campbeltown oily mouthfeel in abundance. The light peat sits beneath everything, providing structure without shouting.
The finish is long and satisfying, with oak spice, dried fruit, and a lingering salinity. It is a whisky that demonstrates what Campbeltown's third distillery can achieve with time and patience. The 12 is the value champion; the 16 is the quality statement.
