First Impressions
Pour Concertmaster and the glass turns burnished copper almost immediately — Taiwan's heat does in three years what Scotland needs a decade for. The aromas leap out: stewed orchard fruit and dark berries lacquered onto the malt by Port cask finishing.
Distillery & Heritage
Kavalan was founded in 2005 by the King Car Group under master blender Ian Chang, with consultancy from the late Dr Jim Swan. Sitting in Yilan County between mountains and the Pacific, the distillery exploits brutal humidity and high temperatures that drive an angel's share of around 12% per year. Concertmaster, finished in a combination of ruby, tawny and white Port casks, was the distillery's first cask-finished release and helped put Taiwanese whisky on the global map.
Tasting Notes in Detail
The nose is unmistakably Port-influenced — plums, cherries, raisin bread — but Kavalan's tropical house style pushes mango and papaya through underneath. The palate is generous and almost dessert-like: chocolate-dipped cherries, fig roll, cinnamon and a creamy vanilla backbone from the underlying ex-bourbon maturation. Water softens the spice and brings out a rosewater note.
Verdict
One of the most accessible introductions to Kavalan and a brilliant demonstration of how subtropical maturation can transform Port cask influence.
