First Impressions
A reimagined flagship for Jura's core range, the 12 Year Old is matured in American white oak ex-bourbon barrels before being finished in oloroso sherry casks. At 40% it's approachable and easygoing but more characterful than Jura's younger expressions.
Distillery & Heritage
Isle of Jura Distillery sits in Craighouse, the only village on a wild island famous for its Paps, its red deer and — thanks to George Orwell writing 1984 at Barnhill — a literary mystique. The modern distillery dates to 1963, built to bring people back to Jura. The 12 Year Old replaced the old Superstition-era core in the 2018 range overhaul.
Tasting Notes in Detail
The nose offers toffee apple, dark honey, orange marmalade and almond with a faint coastal whisper. The palate is smooth and sweet — caramel, baked apple, raisin and ginger — with nutty oloroso oak adding weight. The finish is medium length, sweetly spiced with dried fruit and warm cocoa.
Verdict
An easygoing, well-priced island malt with enough sherry depth to keep it interesting. A fine everyday pour and a solid gateway to Jura's range.
