First Impressions
Jura 10 — from one of Scotland's most remote islands. One road, one distillery, one pub, fewer than 200 residents outnumbered by approximately 5,000 red deer. The distillery sits in Craighouse, the island's sole village.
Orwell's Island
George Orwell described Jura as 'extremely unget-at-able' when he arrived in 1946. He completed Nineteen Eighty-Four at Barnhill farmhouse on the island's northern tip, sending the final typescript to Secker & Warburg in December 1948. The 10 Year Old replaced the former 'Jura Origin' as the entry-level expression in 2018. Matured in American oak bourbon barrels, finished in Oloroso sherry butts.
Tasting
Gentle nose of orange, sweet apple, and toffee with sea salt. Light to medium palate with mellow vanilla, crème brûlée smokiness, and salted caramel character. The finish is mellow with a whisper of smoke and sweet sherry. Pleasant but not complex.
The Verdict
Jura 10 earns a 6.5 — an approachable, easy-drinking island malt at a fair price. It divides opinion among enthusiasts, but the Orwell connection and the sheer remoteness of the island give it romance. At £28, a decent everyday dram with a great story behind it.
