First Impressions
Jameson Black Barrel — the step up from standard Jameson. Its defining feature: double-charred ex-bourbon barrels. The barrels are fired once during original coopering, then charred a second time before filling, intensifying vanilla and toasted wood character.
The Double Char
Higher proportion of single pot still whiskey than standard Jameson, giving more body and spice. Part of Jameson's 'Makers Series' from Midleton (Irish Distillers/Pernod Ricard). The double-charring technique was developed by Midleton's coopers. 40%.
Tasting
Butterscotch and fudge nose with toffee and shortbread. Nutty, smooth palate with vanilla, cinnamon, and lemony citrus. Toasted wood finish with lingering vanilla. A genuine step up from standard Jameson.
The Verdict
Jameson Black Barrel earns a 7 — an excellent upgrade from standard Jameson at just £30. The double-charred barrels add genuine depth, and the higher pot still content gives more body. A strong entry point for bourbon drinkers exploring Irish whiskey. Pleasant, not complex, but very well-made.
