Inchgower has never been the distillery that commands queues at auction houses or inspires breathless social media posts. It sits quietly in the coastal stretch near Buckie, producing spirit that has long served the blending industry — most notably as a contributor to Bell's. But that anonymity is precisely what makes independent bottlings like this Watt Whisky release so interesting. When a small bottler pulls a single cask from a distillery that rarely gets its name on the label, you're getting something unfiltered by marketing — just the spirit, the wood, and time.

This is a 2012 vintage, bottled at a muscular 58.3% ABV after thirteen years of maturation. Watt Whisky, run by Mark Watt out of Campbeltown, have built a solid reputation for selecting casks that show genuine distillery character rather than drowning everything in sherry influence. That philosophy suits Inchgower well. This is a distillery whose spirit tends toward a waxy, slightly savoury profile — not an obvious crowd-pleaser, but one that rewards patience and an open mind.

At cask strength, this is not a whisky that meets you halfway. It demands your attention from the first pour. There is a weight and density here that speaks to well-chosen oak and unhurried maturation. Thirteen years is a respectable age for a Speyside single malt, long enough for complexity to develop without the wood taking over entirely. The high ABV tells you this hasn't been reduced, and I'd strongly recommend spending time with it before adding water — let the glass breathe for ten minutes and see what emerges before you reach for the jug.

Tasting Notes

I'll be honest — my notes from this particular session are not ones I'm prepared to commit to print just yet. I want to revisit this bottle over several weeks before I pin down the specifics. What I will say is that the general character is unmistakably Inchgower: that coastal Speyside quality, neither fully maritime nor fully orchard-fruited, sitting in its own particular lane. At 58.3%, there are layers here that will unfold differently with each pour. I'll update this review with full tasting notes once I've spent proper time with it.

The Verdict

At £71.50, this represents genuine value in the current independent bottling market. Thirteen-year-old cask strength single malt from any Speyside distillery at this price point is increasingly difficult to find, and from a bottler with Watt Whisky's track record, you're not gambling blindly. Inchgower may not have the name recognition of its neighbours along the Moray coast, but that anonymity works in your favour here — you're paying for what's in the glass, not what's on the label. I'm scoring this 8.2 out of 10. It's a confident, well-selected cask that showcases an underappreciated distillery, and at this strength it will give you weeks of discovery as the bottle opens up. For the curious drinker who wants something beyond the usual Speyside suspects, this is well worth your money.

Best Served

Start neat in a Glencairn, giving it a good ten minutes of air before your first sip. The 58.3% ABV will benefit from a few drops of cool water — add it gradually, a little at a time, and you'll find the spirit opens considerably between pours. This is an evening dram, one to sit with rather than rush. A classic Highball would be an extravagance at this strength and price, but if you're feeling generous, the density of the spirit would carry beautifully through good soda water and ice.
